The project is about the transformation of a destroyed building into an artist house in Rio dei Mendicoli, Venice. The new house preserves what is left of the original structure and proposes a new and modern layout.
The main element of the house is a double layer staircase (or two staircases running one on top of the other) taking advantage of a preexistent cut in the façade. Both staircases start from the open courtyard and cut deep into the building. One reaches even further giving a direct access from the canal. The program consists of an open space on the ground floor connected to the patio for gatherings and exhibitions.
The lower staircase goes then to the first floor where the artist studio is located. The upper staircase takes directly to the second floor and to the mansard roof where the house is situated. The project preserves as much as possible the original materials adding steel and a glass façade.
