Dune Viaducts

The dune viaducts cross the highway N15 and are located on the boundary of two very different worlds: the dunes of the coastal zone and the industrial Rotterdam port area. They form the link between two contrasting areas: nature and Industry, rest and activity, recreation and work.

The retaining walls are organically shaped and their appearance speaks the language of the landscape. In contrast, the bridges and overpasses are robust and with a strong industrial look form the connection to the port area. The colors of the pigmented concrete structures emphasize contrast: the retaining walls are in white concrete, while the bridges are dark gray. This gives the dune viaducts a minimalistic and yet very distinguished look.

I was involved in this project when construction was almost over and we had to add some additional details to the bridges, such as the lettering with the bridge names (Prinses M√°ximaviaduct).

Developed as part of a small team while working at Zwarts & Jansma Architecten in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
